Product description
A large cactus to about 3 m tall with thick, blue, upright to decumbent, branching stems that can reach 15 cm in diameter. The large fuzzy areoles hold 6 or more short, radial spines and 1 or more long central spine. New spines are initially blood red to yellow and fade to black and then dull gray or white with age. The large, fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers open at night and are followed by sweetly scented, edible and tasty fruits that are considered a choice "Pitahaya". Native to dry hillsides in Ecuador and Peru between 1600 and 3400 m. In cultivation it does well in many warm temperate climates. On account of its contents of mescaline and other alkaloids, Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi has a long history of use in traditional medicine in Peru. In many countries cultivation for ornamental purposes is permitted while consumption is prohibited
